Boat motors with the long drive shaft?
Im not sure what they are called but the seem to be most common in Asia. The engine is on the top of the boat like an outboard but the drive shaft and prop stick out sometimes several feet. The boats they are on also tend to be narrow. Is there a reason for this design? Its it still used?
As mentioned already, they are called ‘long tail’ boats. they are a common sight in Thailand on the rivers and canals there. They are extremely efficient and fast and relatively stable but I don’t think I’d want to be out at sea in one. Some more sea kindly, larger beamed boats also use the same engine and shaft arrangement. The boat is steered by pivoting the whole engine and shaft using a tiller attached to the block or the engine mounts.
