What is the best treatment for a bad case of black fly and deer fly bites?

My father just came back from being up in the great north woods, and this time of year the flies are awful – he looks like he has a very bad case of chicken pox from the waist up. I told him to cover himself with calamine, but I don’t think it is helping much.

Any suggestions?
