Classification of music and musicians: What is it like?
Bands come and go, but the classification and reclassification of the music is an exercise that never grows old. There are no hard and fast, there is no universally accepted methodology or definitions fall again. Music geeks are faced with bands changing their sound and / or appearance of the version to version, and a classification system that is completely open to interpretation.
As a starting point, how about nailing some basic definitions and examples of musical genres? This seems simple, but even this can be a challenge. There are a number Agreement between the sexes, the names of genera (or what is still considered a genre in itself) and definitions are often the subject of discussion. But Canada with the help of uber-geek music Allan Cruz, with many hours of trawling through industry publications of music such as Rolling Stone and Spin, here is an attempt at some basic definitions. Indeed, we cling to the rock world for this year, for the purposes of this item, country or western, jazz, adult contemporary music and all kinds of music there are no others that are out of bounds.
Emo: A style of music that is part of punk in their sound, but leaning heavily towards the end emotional, melodramatic and anxiety mounted spectrum. In other words, melodic punk and Moody. Jimmy Eat World is often grouped under the banner of Emo and many people see Panic! At The Disco and AFI for the current occupants as well. The Smiths are another possible candidate Emo.
Goth: A branch of punk, goth called the darker music fan. Proper attire, built almost entirely on black and often extended hair dyed black, red lipstick black, heavy use of mascara and black nail polish. In general, the look was scary, the music can move sinister atmosphere. Classic examples: Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy.
New Romantics: appearing as part of the punk music scene in the early post- 1980s New Romantics favored ruffled shirts, skinny ties and makeup. classic bands in this respect include Duran Duran, Visage, Japan, and Roxy Music.
Synthpop: A sound that became popular in the 1970s and early 80s, Synthpop was, as its name suggests, the pop-oriented, which relied heavily on the use of keyboards, drum machines and synthesizers, and guitars tend to avoid or less relegated to supporting instruments. Classic examples: Depeche Mode, Human League and OMD.
Heavy Metal: Gaining prominence in 60s and 70s, Heavy Metal is a "heavy" mix of rock and blues with an emphasis on guitar and drums. The bands tend to take a look including long hair, shirts, tight jeans and leather – if you've never confused with New Romantics. Classic Heavy Metal including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Metallica. Spinal Tap is the definitive heavy metal band false.
Heavy Metal all types produced offspring, some of which have been or are popular enough justify its own definition.
Hair Metal: Heavy Metal with more of a Pop Rock and style, nothing too deep, but to try to attract a wider width. Hair Metal is apparently about a variant of the 70s glam look with red lipstick, tight leather, cuffs, scarves, and long-term, with tips, teased, or hair dyed. The eye tends to undermine their credibility with their peers from metal worse. Poison, Ratt and Cinderella all went to this niche. Hair metal bands tend to suffer in the circuit of the meeting because, although may still be possible to play with your hair too often failed in the past years and without …
Nu Metal: An attempt to update Day Heavy Metal 90s. The elements of other genres mixed in, sometimes with rap, grunge, sometimes maybe a bit of property Industrial or Gothic. Again, it depends heavily on the guitar and drums, but the group left the classic look Heavy Metal and thought a bit. Classic examples: Korn, Orgy and Linkin Park.
Speed Metal: Heavy Metal thinking, but faster. With Heavy Metal has become too heavy and awkward for some, Speed Metal developed. The heavy metal guitar solo became more important in the songs and rhythms of the increased considerably. early practitioners included Judas Priest style and more contemporary bands such as Primal Fear kept the tradition alive.
Progressive Rock (Also known as Prog-Rock): This what happens when a rock band decides to explore concepts and intellectual and musical virtuosity rather than the aim of classic pop single three minutes. Synthesizers and string instruments are often used to fill the sound and make it more elaborate. Drums abandoned their kits Batteries is complex percussion. Rush, Pink Floyd and Genesis (at least the beginning of Genesis) are among the most popular groups Prog-Rock.
Industrial As its name indicates, industrial music sounds good, strong and mechanics. It is not known to be particularly radio-friendly because at unusual sounds, aggressive and frequent use of equipment or socially ill at ease about risk. The classic examples are: Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy and Ministry.
Hip Hop: The use of elements of a violent shock, sampling, Rap and often the use of a turntable, Hip Hop has moved from inner cities to succeed in business through the 80s. Run DMC Beastie Boys and OutKast are just some examples of the vast catalog of Hip Hop groups successfully.
Punk: A style of music that has become important in the mid to late 70s, punk was built around the principle that everyone can and must make music, regardless of musical ability. Punk has become a sounding board of a generation of angry young men, whose songs have been recorded social with music which is high, fast and easy. Classic examples: Sex Pistols, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers and The Ramones.
Electronics: a distinctive sound that developed in the second half of the late 70s and synthesis technology is becoming more widely available. Unlike Synthpop, electronic artists seemed more interested in exploring soundscapes on stringing sounds interesting and the production of singles. Kraftwerk was one pioneer of electronic motion.
Grunge: A sound that comes and has become synonymous with the Seattle music scene in the 1980s and early 1990s, a type of metal punk meets adventure. The uniform consists of typical grunge jeans and a short sleeved T-shirt worn over a shirt long sleeves, sometimes with a goatee on his chin omnipresent men. Bonus points were awarded for wearing a red and black wardrobe wood. Examples: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains.
Psychedelic Rock: For those who loved Rock and Heavy Metal, but considered too restrictive, said Psychedelic Rock all kinds of fuzz guitar, distortion and sometimes incoherent songs to create a different sound. are classic examples of Jesus and Mary Chain and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, with its roots in the 1960s with the Strawberry Alarm Clock and even the Beatles.
Rockabilly: When the rock is too crazy complicated, apparently, some bands have the nostalgia of the old school 50 style roots rock made by Elvis Presley and others. He wound jeans, white shirts and leather jackets motorcycle black hair her hair back, and pumped rockabilly. You will not find a better example than the Stray Cats.
Ska: A combination of Jamaican music and rock that has reached the zenith of his popularity in the 70s and early 80s groups British as Madness, English Beat and The Specials. Ska was dancing and the bands tend to be larger than the costumes rock, standard guitar, drum and bass, but usually combined with the increase with horns, organ and keyboards, and sometimes a dancer named scene.
Classification Next to music is a more general term used to cover a larger share of the music, often to describe the format of a station music.
Alt-Rock: From quite simply as an alternative to rock music played on the radio, he used a classification strange, dominated by groups that could be heard on alternative radio stations or college: REM, for example. But in 1990, "rock" as it was known was left to the radio and known as Alt-Rock has actually begun to dominate the play lists.
Rock: Once upon a time it was simple. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and other groups like them, were considered bands. Over time, however, these bands tend to be grouped under Classic Rock. Today, there are rock bands – Foo Fighters are a good example – But it is frequently referred to as Alt-Rock. In other words, Alt-Rock has largely usurped Rock as "rock" today. Is Questions? You and me …
Indie: bands that are not directly affiliated with any record labels, usually giving artists more control Art on the music, take personal cost of a higher percentage of the production, promotion and distribution of their music. radio stations of the university are strong supporters of indie bands, but some, such as Arcade Fire have made the leap to the general public.
Pop: The less frightening (at least superficially) more melodic and radio-friendly of all the pop artists intended to sell large quantities of records and make it attractive to the widest possible audience. Pop has changed over time, but the stations are pop, where you hear people like Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Spice Girls and Girls Aloud.
Classic Rock: Now Alt-Rock that is known as the Rock, and rock bands are sounding a former funny little to many listeners, where does that leave 60, 70 and 80 rock bands? Now, they are packed in the period of Classic Rock, a mass category that can include everything from the Beatles to Van Halen.
New Wave: A derivative of the marketing term originally used by record companies to describe many post-punk and New Romantic synthpop, groups British in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This is a very broad label that has been used to describe anything from Depeche Fashion A-Ha.
is that the types and classifications are constantly changing, the bands moving between genres and even definitions themselves are subject to interpretation.
An artist like Neil Young is a good example of how musicians Vex music geeks. Earlier in his career, Young played with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Still, Nash and Young. Would typically be considered a rock singer with a tilt Folk.
Neil then through a phase where he moved to his country, always with a touch of folk. The harvest is fairly typical this time, but returned as rock songs a hurricane. From nowhere, turned into an electronic album that was so unexpected, ended in a brawl with his label whether the release meets its contractual obligation – which held that Re-ac-tor was so there "should not be considered as a record of Neil Young. "
Young was a bit of a phase of Rockabilly, Grunge, and then finally to show off in Rockin 'The Free World only be approved by Grunge became an anthem. From then Harvest Moon swung dangerously close to adult contemporary music, and now seems to be back to their folk roots.
Then how the hell do you classify Neil Young? Well, you can choose to break his career on stage and classified each individually, or make it safe and file in Classic Rock. A good weekend's worth discussing, and I can not.
And, of course, can combine categories and classifications in an attempt to define a group. The police, for example, defy a direct definition and thus become a composite ranking: reggae-influenced new wave, post-punk power-pop trio.
Simple, right?
