What is the difference between a single ply pickguard and a protective plate 3 folds into a guitar?

I was just wondering, because in the current Buy an electric guitar, I just wanted to know the difference.

That's pretty much just cosmetic. A guard is a 3-ply sandwiched usually two colors of the material a second color. A 3-fold is thicker, and theoretically will last longer. They are also slightly more resistant to scratches. Ken
