How do I choose between writing and play blues or folk with my guitar. I love both genres equally?
Blues is folk music, to paraphrase a long ago musician, because it’s music for folks. Write about what you know and have experienced, or what others you know experience. Muddy Waters knew where the money was during the folk music boom, and showed up at Newport with just his acoustic guitar, sans band. Chess Records jumped on it by releasing artists’ LPs titled “The Real Folk Blues”.
You can compose in any form. Anyone who takes exception to that can stuff it, since there is no law stating you must be locked into one genre. For an example, check out the late Josh White. He sang blues, spirituals, country and folk songs as he pleased. His catalog is large, varied and brilliant.
