Changing strings on a fender strat?

I just got a beautiful sunburst strat a month ago and decided that it’s time to get new strings. When I started to change the strings though, I noticed that every time I would tune the strings from Low E through the High E the Low E would get out of tune until the bridge was all the way up. Once the bridge was all the way up, though, I could use the whammy bar. What can I do to make the bridge stay flat while tuning all the strings?

Im not quite sure what you mean. But it sounds like you could have a spring tension issue. This would cause the bridge to sit out of place and not flush to the body of the guitar as it should and as it was when you first bought it. If the bridge is sticking upwards and out away from the guitar it means the strings are holding it out like that. You need to balance this by adjusting the tension of the springs inside the guitar. These can be accessed threw the back. There is a screw were they are attached to the body – these need to be tightened or loosened accordingly. By the way, the only reason this would have happened is because the gauge of the replacement strings must be different than the gauge of those first on it. Heavier gauged strings will pull the bridge out and lighter gauged strings will cause it to sink inwards. Each time you change to a different gauge of string, you will have to re-adjust the springs tension to equal and balance the set up. Hope this helps.
