My uncle has a boat he bought in 1978 that is still as seaworthy as it was back then. Of course, the motor has been replaced a time or two, but the hull is still in perfect condition. He takes it through the choppy waters of Barnegat Inlet at least weekly and it still looks great. I asked him why his boat doesn?t show any wear and tear, and he said maintenance is the key. It may not have occurred to you to wax your boat, but it makes a world of difference in the long run. The fiberglass hull is covered in a gel coat that can oxidize just like your vehicle?s clear coat. The difference is that the gel coat is constantly exposed to water, oftentimes salt water. Oxidation results in a chalky white residue within the gel coat that makes the hull look dull and neglected. This effect can be prevented by applying a quality wax like Meguiar?s Mirror Glaze #56 Boat/RV Pure Wax. There is a difference between car wax and boat wax, so use one recommended for boats. Meguiar?s #56 Boat/RV Pure Wax is designed specifically for the protection of fiberglass and all painted surfaces. It is made of pure Brazilian carnauba wax, silicones, polymers, and resins to provide extraordinary gloss and long-lasting protection. Resins allow the wax to bond to the gel coat in order to withstand the friction of the boat cutting the water and salt. The carnauba creates a beautiful shine and slickness that allows the boat to glide through the water with less resistance. Remove them with Meguiar?s #45 Marine/RV Polish to achieve a perfectly clean surface before waxing. A clean gel coat ensures that oxidation will not occur underneath the wax coat. After polishing, apply Meguiar?s #56 Boat/RV Pure Wax either by hand or with a polisher. Use a terry or foam applicator to apply by hand. To apply by machine, use a gray finishing pad. Work at a speed between 3000-4000 OPM on a dual action polisher, or 1000-1200 RPM on an orbital polisher. Apply wax to one section at a time. When it dries to a haze, buff it off using a microfiber towel. As you polish, toss your used pads into a mixture of DP Polishing Pad Rejuvenator and water. When you add one pad, take one out, rinse it and lay it out to dry. This system will allow you to have a clean pad on hand when the one you are using becomes soiled. In addition to boats, Meguiar?s Mirror Glaze #56 Boat/RV Pure Wax works well on RVs! It?s fiberglass-friendly formula makes it superior to car wax on RVs.
